Laguiole is first of all a village in the Aubrac, in Aveyron, and a knife style. An authentic Laguiole is handmade in France, with the guilloché bee on the spring, stainless or carbon steel and a handle in wood, horn or bone. All our pieces come from French cutlery makers in Laguiole and Thiers.
No. Laguiole is a village and a type of knife, and several makers produce it. The word alone does not tell you who made the knife: the maker's name, such as Forge de Laguiole, Fontenille Pataud or Château Laguiole, identifies the manufacturer.
Look for the guilloché bee on the spring, the quality of the steel (stainless or carbon) and the nobility of the handle: juniper, olive wood, horn or bone. A Laguiole knife handmade in France is a sign of durability compared with the many imitations.
It is a sommelier knife: a pocket corkscrew with a lever and a blade to cut the foil. It is also called a Laguiole sommelier or bottle opener. Château Laguiole has made it its specialty, and Forge de Laguiole and Fontenille Pataud offer them too.
For regular use, the Original sommelier from Forge de Laguiole has a conical worm with five coils, designed for older corks. Fontenille Pataud offers Magnum sommeliers in many materials, and Château Laguiole offers collections such as Classique, Grand Cru and Melchior. The choice mostly comes down to the handle and the finish.
Forge de Laguiole makes its knives in the village of Laguiole, since 1987, on a tradition going back to 1828. Fontenille Pataud is a Thiers maker founded in 1929, with a lifetime warranty on its knives. Château Laguiole, created in 1993 by a sommelier, focuses on the sommelier knife.
