Wine cellar cooling units

Cooling units and compressors for wine cellars, wall-mounted or ducted

Wall-mounted cooling units (through-the-wall)

Browse 7 wall-mounted cooling units

The unit is fitted into an opening in the cellar wall: it cools the cellar and releases heat into the adjoining room, which must be large enough and well ventilated. The simplest option to install, for small and medium cellars.

The unit is installed outside the cellar, in a utility room or outdoors, and sends cool air through ducts. More discreet in the cellar and more powerful, it needs a more involved installation: for large cellars and custom projects.

Frequently asked questions

Wall-mounted or ducted cooling unit?

A wall-mounted cooling unit is set into the cellar wall and releases heat into the adjoining room: simple to install, it suits small and medium cellars. A ducted cooling unit is installed outside the cellar and sends it cool air through ducts: more discreet and more powerful, it suits large cellars.

What power should you choose?

The power depends on the volume of the cellar, its insulation and the temperature of the adjoining room. Each product page lists the cellar volume covered, in cubic feet: compare it with the volume of your cellar (length × width × height, in feet), then have an advisor confirm your choice.

Compressor or wine cellar cooling unit: is it the same thing?

Yes, in the case of a wine cellar. Several manufacturers call their units "compressors", such as the WhisperKOOL SC PRO or the Wine Guardian: they are complete cooling units that cool the whole room. They are not replacement parts for the compressor of a wine cellar.

How much does a wine cellar cooling unit cost?

The price depends mainly on the power and the type of installation. Small wall-mounted models, such as the KoolR Magnum or the Wine-R, cost less than $2,500. More powerful models and ducted systems range from $5,000 to $12,000.

Do you need to insulate the cellar before installing a cooling unit?

Yes. A cooling unit is not enough in a poorly insulated room: it runs non-stop and struggles to hold the temperature. Insulation, a vapour barrier and a sealed door come first. Our guide to insulating a wine cellar explains the steps.
